NFIB Wisconsin 2023 Small Business Victories so Far This Legislative Session

Eliminated the Personal Property Tax NFIB, a leading advocate for the elimination of the personal property tax, will save business owners over $173 million.   Unemployment Tax Rates Employer paid unemployment tax rates will remain in the lowest tax rate schedule through 2023 as a result of legislation enacted with the strong support of NFIB.   Small Business Fairness – Essential vs. Non-Essential NFIB backed legislation enacted into law that eliminates the authority of public health officials to issue orders or mandates that distinguish between essential and non-essential businesses.   Preserve Consumer Choice/Promote Economic Freedom The Legislature approved legislation supported by NFIB that prohibits local or state government from restricting the use or sale of devices and motor vehicles based on the energy source to power them.   Paid Family Leave NFIB opposed a plan, rejected by the Legislature, that would have established a paid family and medical leave program funded by payroll taxes.   Local Employment Laws NFIB opposed a proposal, rejected by the Legislature, that repeals current law that prohibits local governments from enacting ordinances relating to minimum wage, family and medical leave, and various other employment issues.   Unemployment Insurance NFIB strongly supports unemployment insurance reforms, approved by the Legislature, that improve work search requirements, establish strict eligibility rules be applied to applicants for jobs but fail to show for interviews or report to work when hired, and creating a linkage between unemployment insurance benefits and current economic conditions.
