NFIB Statement on Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act

LANSING, Mich. (Dec. 5, 2024) – Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director, expressed her disappointment over the passage of Senate Bill 1022 today, which makes changes to the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by removing certain protections for more than eighty business trades and professions already regulated under various state licensing laws and opens them up to frivolous and harmful lawsuits. The vast majority of the impacted businesses are small businesses.

“This unnecessary legislation will have a negative impact on Michigan’s small businesses,” said Fisher. “These businesses are already regulated and overseen by state and federal agencies, whose job is, in part, to protect consumers. These agencies can levy fines, require changes to businesses practices, and even order a business closed. Given the regulation and oversight that already exist, those benefiting most from SB 1022 are trial lawyers, not consumers.”
