NFIB Reacts to End of Legislative Session in Annapolis

April 8, 2024 Last Edit: July 26, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 8, 2024) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy association, released the following statement by State Director Mike O’Halloran in response to the end of General Assembly’s legislative session this evening:

“By and large, small business owners are walking away from the 2024 legislative session unscathed. To be sure, the budget agreement raising some taxes and fees $340 million will certainly have an impact on many businesses. But a lot of concern is on what the future will bring for Maryland’s employers.

“This year, the largest tax increase in history was proposed, with promises from some that it and other broad-based tax increases will be back again next session. NFIB urged the General Assembly to take an in-depth look into the state’s tax structure, its competitiveness, and how it can be used to promote job growth and economic development. The tax bills we saw this session do nothing in that regard.”
