NFIB Member Urges Texas Legislature to Do Away With Double Taxation on Small Businesses

When asked about a proposal to raise the inventory tax exemption from $2,500 to $100,000, Spring Branch small business owner and NFIB member Bud Walters quipped: “It’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but it’s not much. The inventory tax just needs to go away.” In a conversation with ABC 13’s Tom Abrahams, Walters called the inventory tax ‘double taxation’ and that his small business pays $40,000 each year in inventory tax – money that could instead be used to grow his business and invest in his employees. During the State of the State address, Governor Greg Abbott listed property tax relief as his first emergency item for this legislative session. There’s no question that now is the time to cut the inventory tax. We need your help to tell the small business story. If you’d like to share your story on why the Texas Legislature needs to cut the inventory tax, please contact Texas State Director Annie Spilman (annie.spilman@nfib.org).
