Small business owners are concerned agents will unfairly target them

NFIB Joins Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis for Roundtable on IRS Overreach

NFIB Legislative Director Tim Nungesser joined Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis at Ally Building Solutions in Orlando on Thursday, July 13, for a roundtable discussion on small business owners’ concerns about the IRS, especially a 2022 law giving the agency an additional $80 billion primarily for enforcement. “It’s important to remember that small business owners wear many hats in their business,” Nungesser said. “They are the owner, the bookkeeper, the HR director, and they fill in the gaps when a worker calls in sick. They don’t have teams of attorneys and lobbyists on staff to help them navigate a complex IRS regulation. They’ve just got to do the best they can. That can sometimes lead to compliance issues. “The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provided $80 billion in new funding for the IRS to go after businesses,” Nungesser said. “It’s important to remember that just 4% of that money went to education and assistance for taxpayers. That’s unconscionable. “What small business owners need is to be able to pick up the phone and call a live human being when they have a question about a regulation,” he said. “They need the IRS to focus on processing their returns in a timely manner. They don’t need teams of enforcement agents just trying to raise revenues off of the backs of small business owners.”
