NFIB Calls on Trenton Policymakers to Act to Suspend or Reduce $0.329 NJ Gas Tax Now

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRENTON, N.J. (March 10, 2022) – Today, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) called on New Jersey lawmakers to help provide fuel cost relief for small businesses, workers, and commuters across the Garden State. NFIB’s New Jersey state director urged immediate action to either reduce or suspend the $0.329 state gas tax until fuel prices begin to stabilize. “Whether commuting to work, building a house, or delivering a meal, small businesses across New Jersey are being hurt by a dramatic rise in fuel prices,” said NFIB State Director Eileen Kean. “Governor Murphy and state lawmakers should take immediate steps to provide relief by reducing or suspending the $0.329 state fuel tax until this crisis abates.” “Rising fuel costs not only affect virtually every industry in New Jersey, but also hurt the wallets of the workers and consumers who are already coping with inflationary conditions,” said Kean. “Lawmakers must act now to reduce the state fuel tax and help hardworking New Jerseyans who are simply trying to earn a living. These are especially perilous times for small businesses, many of which are still rebuilding after two years of COVID-instilled slowdowns.” According to NFIB’s latest Small Business Economic Trends report, 26 percent of business owners are listing inflation as their top concern. Tomorrow, March 11, NFIB New Jersey will hold its 2022 Virtual Small Business Day, held annually to discuss the serious challenges confronting the state’s small business owners. Sen. Steve Oroho (R-Franklin), the Senate Minority Leader, will address small business owners and take their questions, and gas prices are certain to be a major topic.
