NFIB Calls for Action in Springfield to Provide Relief from Fuel Costs

(SPRINGFIELD) March 28, 2022 – Today, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) called on the Illinois General Assembly to enact fuel cost relief for small businesses, workers, and residents of Illinois. NFIB Illinois State Director Chris Davis urged immediate action to either suspend the application of the state Sales Tax on motor fuel or provide Illinois residents with a corresponding income tax deduction based on the amount of sales tax paid at the pumps:

“Whether the cost of delivering goods or services, or commuting to and from the workplace, small businesses across Illinois are being hurt by dramatically rising fuel prices. Combined with record inflation, supply chain delays, and hiring challenges, rising fuel prices are pushing small business owners to the brink. Policymakers must act now to provide crucial relief to Illinoisans simply trying to earn a living.

“While no solution is perfect, providing some mechanism for relief at the pump will enable Illinois residents and employers to navigate one less challenge. Illinois legislators can act to temporarily suspend the sales tax on motor fuel, or enable Illinois residents to claim an income tax deduction based on those same taxes paid.”
