News Release: Small Business Saturday Comment Available

Main Street enterprises closing out a difficult year could use a little boost

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 29, 2024—The state director for California’s largest and leading small business association will be available for comment, tomorrow, Small Business Saturday, November 30, on policies affecting the ability of Main Street, mom-and-pop entrepreneurs to finish out a difficult year.

“For many Main Street enterprises, Small Business Saturday begins the final lap toward the end of the year, when many of them must decide whether they have the wherewithal to remain open for business past the New Year,” said John Kabateck, state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in California.

“When you spend some of your holiday shopping budget at a Main Street business, you’re doing much, much more than just helping someone’s bottom line, you’re investing in the health and welfare of your community—an investment that pays dividends to your family, friends, and neighbors all year round,” added Kabateck, who pointed to NFIB’s recently released Small Businesses’ Contribution to the Community report showing how deeply involved Main Street entrepreneurs are in the civic affairs of their cities and towns.

According to NFIB’s latest monthly Small Business Economic Trends report, “Sales growth has slowed in recent months and cost pressures continue to squeeze the bottom line, but small business owners remain hopeful about future conditions.”

Kabateck also pointed out that running a small business in California is more difficult than in any other state because of needless compliance headaches like Workplace Violence Prevention Plans, a crazy quilt of minimum-wage laws (instead of one rate for all), higher unemployment insurance taxes because of the state’s refusal to pay off its federal loan, and a Legislature forever concocting ways to tax businesses more without one idea on how to get more customers walking through the door.

“With their rejection of a higher minimum wage and support of fixing the retail theft problem on the November ballot, California voters demonstrated their unwavering commitment to helping the corner small businesses within their communities.”
