NFIB member in Iowa Scott Turczynski on the state of small business in Iowa.

Listen: Iowa NFIB Member on Simon Conway Show

NFIB member in Iowa Scott Turczynski, Chief Operating Officer of Heartland Companies talked with Simon Conway on the Simon Conway Show about the challenges small business owners are facing right now. Turczynski’s small business is a collection of contractors, suppliers and commercial construction based out of Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. One of the challenges they face right now is that they cannot find skilled trade workers – guys and gals who want to frame walls, hang drywall and paint. “The fact that every business out there has help wanted signs out doesn’t help and what we’re hiring for isn’t easy work! We really have to find the right person,” said Turczynski. Inflation is also another chappenge. In construction, Turczynski’s bids on materials are protected from price inflation, but only for so long. The prices are constratly fluxuating so he has to be vigilant on his quotes because most only last about 20 days. That’s because the prices are going up so fast. There is some good news, though. Turczynski says his small business will finish year strong. He says there are plenty of construction jobs out there, be he’s seeing more public work than private work. That’s because interest rates have spiked. He’s hoping those interest rates will start to decrease soon and he’ll be able to get his share of the work. You can listen to the entire interview here. Scott’s iinterview starts at the 17:40 mark.
