Lawmakers Return to Raleigh with $1 Billion Surplus

April 22, 2024 Last Edit: June 5, 2025

The focus will be on adjusting the state budget, but NFIB will be watching for any issues that could affect small businesses

The 2024 session of the General Assembly convenes on Wednesday, April 24, during a contentious election year, budget surplus, and unfinished business from the previous session.

This is predominantly a budget adjustment session since the first year of each two-year session the budget is approved, but many new and additional issues will be added to the budget over the next few weeks.

“NFIB and the business community don’t anticipate many issues to be addressed during this session due to all the tax and regulatory reforms passed during the last and previous sessions,” NFIB State Director Gregg Thompson said. “Of course, we will closely monitor for any new developments that may come up regarding health insurance mandates, new regulations, tax reforms or any other proposals that would impact the small business community.”
