The amendments would make changes to the state's legal system
Louisiana voters will decide on four proposed state constitutional amendments when they go to the polls on March 29.
NFIB has not taken a position on any of the amendments, but here’s what you need to know:
Amendment 1
- Grants the Louisiana Supreme Court the authority to discipline out-of-state attorneys for unethical legal practices in Louisiana. Also allows the legislature to create specialized trial courts with limited jurisdiction.
Amendment 2
- Revises tax and financial policies, including lowering the maximum income tax rate, increasing deductions for citizens over 65, implementing a government growth limit, adjusting certain constitutional funds, maintaining property tax exemptions, and mandating a permanent teacher salary increase through surplus funding.
Amendment 3
- Summary: Allows the Louisiana legislature to determine which felony crimes committed by individuals under 17 can be prosecuted in adult court.
Amendment 4
- Requires judicial vacancies to be filled using the earliest possible election date.
