The head of NIFB, or the National Federation of Independent Business, applauded Gov. Kim Reynolds for her leadership and commitment to small business issues in her 2021 Condition of the State.

“Thanks to Gov. Reynolds, Iowa is in a much better fiscal and economic situation than many other states across the country,” said Matt Everson, NFIB State Director in Iowa. “Gov. Reynolds was able to keep most of our small businesses open as other states shut down completely. Iowa was also able to avoid a budget shortfall, unlike so many of our neighboring states.”

“And remember, that unlike many states we’re starting from a good financial position. We aren’t looking at tough budget cuts and we’re certainly not looking at raising taxes. If anything, we need to continue the conversation about cutting taxes, and we can start by getting rid of the unnecessary triggers that were put in place in 2018. Let’s make Iowa more competitive and guarantee our taxpayers that they can keep more of their hard-earned money,” said Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Last night, Gov. Reynolds laid out her commitment to issues that small business owners are passionate about: helping our small business owners find qualified workers through her Future Ready Iowa program, continuing important occupational licensing reform, and cutting income and property taxes. “Despite the critical reforms lawmakers and the Governor helped pass in 2018, Iowa still has one of the highest income-tax rates in the country. As small business owners here in our state continue to overcome the financial setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, income tax reform is essential. It’s the best and most fair way to give every small business and their hard-working employees more of their hard-earned money with continuing to grow Iowa’s economy,” said Everson.

Everson also commended the Governor for her promise last night to continue her efforts for occupational licensing reform. Last year, important legislation was passed that means Iowa now has one of the most flexible licensing reciprocity and recognition laws in the country. However, there is more to do. Thankfully, the Governor pledged to review each of Iowa’s licensing boards and commissions to make sure they are serving their purpose. NFIB supported that legislation.
