The hearings are scheduled for March 10th – 12th, 2025.
The Illinois Pollution Control Board is holding hearings on adopting some of California’s vehicle emissions standards: Advanced Clean Cars II, Advanced Clean Trucks, and Low NOx Heavy-Duty Omnibus Regulation.
The hearings are scheduled for March 10-12. There will be an opportunity for public comment on March 10 (in-person) and March 11 (online).
The proposed rules, if adopted, would:
- phase out the sale of new gasoline- and diesel-powered cars, pick-up trucks, work vans, and SUVs (passenger cars and light-duty trucks), leading to a complete ban on the sale of non-electric vehicles in 2035 (with limited exceptions).
- reduce the sale of traditional gasoline- and diesel-powered medium- and heavy-duty trucks (Class 2b through Class 8).
- 55% of Class 2b-3 truck sales would have to be electric by 2035.
- 75% of Class 4-8 straight truck sales would have to be electric by 2035.
- 40% of truck tractor sales would have to be electric by 2035.
- impose sweeping new testing and emissions standards on new heavy-duty trucks.
The rules were proposed by a coalition of environmental activist groups last summer. These groups testified in December in support of their proposal during the first two days of hearings. The hearings in March are to allow opponents of the proposed rules to outline their concerns. A similar measure failed to advance in during the spring 2023 legislative session.
