FAMLI, SecureSavings Laws in Effect, NFIB Reminding its Members

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Tony Gagliardi, Colorado State Director, tony.gagliardi@nfib.org, or Tony Malandra, Senior Media Manager, anthony.malandra@nfib.org DENVER, Jan. 30, 2023—Colorado’s leading small-business association is exhausting every channel of communication to alert its membership of two new compliance obligations it needs to be aware of. “We represent the Main Street firms that can’t afford full-time accountants and compliance specialists,” said Tony Gagliardi, Colorado state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). “Almost half of our members process their own payroll, when they get the time, which is becoming scarcer because 91% of them are working more hours to make up for the labor shortage afflicting small businesses across the nation. So, we try and get them the information they need to know quickly so they don’t fall behind in complying with the law, and this year there are two additional ones we want them to know about.” On January 1, the state’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program took effect with premiums to pay for it due April 30. Gagliardi thanked four top officials from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) for taking the time to speak to small-business owners on a special NFIB webinar. Breathing Room! One of the officials, Tracy Marshall, CDLE director of state paid medical and family leave, said that because of the newness of the FAMLI program, CDLE is extending the first payment due date from April 30 to the end of May. SecureSavings In an upcoming NFIB webinar, Hunter Riley, the program director for SecureSavings, will join Gagliardi and small-business owners for a discussion and to answer questions about the program. Employers are required to enroll in the SecureSavings program if they do not currently offer their employees a retirement plan. This is at no additional cost to the employer and contributions are the sole responsibility of the employee. Deadlines to register are dependent on the number of employees a business has. For businesses already offering a retirement plan, they should certify their exemption. The NFIB webinar is free and open to anyone interested in the issue. More here.
