Denton Record-Chronicle: Texas Small Businesses Are Getting Pushed to the Brink

DENTON (April 20, 2023) – From North Texas to the Rio Grande, small business owners are facing a myriad of challenges: inflation, skyrocketing property taxes, and varying ordinances from city to city. As the Denton-Record Chronicle reports: “Rising labor costs and continued supply-chain woes have culminated in growing concerns among owners of small businesses, which, with smaller profit margins, are less resilient to economic pressures. […] “‘It’s sort of everything coming at them — it’s really kind of the perfect storm right now,’ said Annie Spilman, Texas state director at NFIB. ‘They don’t know if they’re going to be able to staff from week to week, they don’t know if they’re going to be able to get their inventory in from week to week, and most don’t have cash reserves on hand.’ […] “Inconsistencies in local ordinances are an additional headache that increases costs, according to Spilman. […] House Bill 2127 — also known as the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act — which would restrict regulation to the state, which [NFIB] says would help small businesses avoid a patchwork of compliance issues across county lines.” CLICK HERE to read the full report. Background: The Texas Regulatory Consistency Act would give local job creators one set of rules to follow statewide while ensuring cities and counties retain their authority to address local concerns. NFIB and local job creators testified before both the House and Senate in support of the bill, with one NFIB member saying: “We need the protection of the state, when it comes to cities telling us how to run our businesses.” READ: San Antonio Small Businesswoman Touts Benefits of Texas Regulatory Consistency Act READ: Texas Job Creator to Senate Panel: ‘Multiple Municipalities Passing Multiple Bills Have a Major Impact on How We Operate Our Small Business’ CLICK HERE to urge your lawmaker to stand up for small businesses.
