Despite $1 Billion Price Tag, Some Lawmakers Still Pushing Heat Tax

This past week, lawmakers debated two proposals: one to fully implement the expensive Clean Heat Act and another to increase taxes on heating fuels.

Whether it’s implementing the Clean Heat Act or a new tax hike on heating fuel, Vermonters could see the price of heating fuel increase by 60 cents per gallon or more.

Now is the time for you to tell your legislators that your small business cannot afford these costly proposals. Your voice can make the difference.

BACKGROUND

Earlier this year, state officials said that over the next ten years the Clean Heat Act would result in a $1 billion tax hike on heating fuel while delivering only $477 million in benefits. Spending a dollar to get fifty cents is NOT a good deal.

Despite this reality, some lawmakers want to forge ahead with expensive new taxes on heating homes and businesses across the state.

These proposals are in addition to the heating fuel tax that Vermonters already pay to support low-income home weatherization improvements, the electric utility surcharge that pays for Efficiency Vermont, and more fees and charges that support clean energy incentives.

There’s no guarantee these expensive mandates will stop here, which is why we need you to make your voice heard.
