Minnesota Dept. of Revenue Offers Sales Tax Education Webinars

If your business could use a refresher on the state sales tax, the Minnesota Department of Revenue is offering two online webinars in September. There is no cost to register for these sessions.

September 14: Introduction to Sales Tax and Use Course

From the department’s website:

This course is an introduction to sales and use taxes in Minnesota. The purpose of the training is to provide the sales and use tax basics, including fundamental elements, local taxes, exemption certificates, record-keeping, filing and payment instructions, and contact information. It is meant to complement to our industry-specific webinars.

The majority of the content covered in this webinar is the general information covered in our Basic Sales and Use Tax Course.  Therefore, if you have attended a Basic Sales and Use Tax class or webinar, the information will be a refresher. This webinar is a complement to our industry-specific webinars.

This course is available as a webinar only.

This course is designed for:

  • Accountants
  • Bookkeepers
  • Business owners
  • Purchasing agents
  • Others who need a working knowledge of sales and use tax

September 27: Sales Tax and Use for Service Providers

From the department’s website:

This course covers how Minnesota Sales and Use Tax laws apply to businesses providing these taxable services in Minnesota.

  • Building cleaning and maintenance services
  • Detective and security services
  • Laundry and dry-cleaning services
  • Lawn and garden maintenance services
  • Tree and shrub services

The primary focus is to identify which services provided are taxable and which services are not. We will also give participants a better understanding of what items a taxable service provider may buy exempt from sales tax and what items are taxable.

Some of the content covered in this webinar is covered in the “How Sales and Use Tax Applies to Business Activities” section of our Basic Sales and Use Tax Course but we provide additional content and detail in this webinar based on participants’ feedback.
