Small Support for Raising Sales Tax in Exchange for Lower Property Tax

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Suzanne Budge, Idaho State Director, sbs@sbsidaho.com or Tony Malandra, Senior Media Manager, anthony.malandra@nfib.org BOISE, Idaho, Jan. 17, 2023—The release today of results from a poll of NFIB-member Idaho small-business owners should give legislators guidance on two issues and suggest to them they ought to keep another two from crossing our state’s borders. As it does every year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small-business association, polls its members on state and federal issues affecting their right to own, operate, and grow their businesses. Results from the annual polls help center NFIB’s lobbying positions in Boise and in Washington, D.C. “Of immediate relevance to this session of the Idaho Legislature are small-business owners’ opinions on property tax reduction and Medicaid expansion,” said Suzanne Budge, NFIB’s Idaho state director, “and on the other two questions, it’s resoundingly clear they don’t want Idaho adopting California’s vehicle emission standards or policies hamstringing the operations of state agencies.” The 2023 Idaho State Member Ballot asked four questions: Should Idaho raise the state sales tax rate in exchange for reducing property taxes? Yes 20% No 69% Und. 11% Should Idaho prohibit its state agencies from doing business with institutions that adhere to principles advocated by environmental and social justice groups? Yes 72% No 18% Und. 10% Should Idaho continue the Medicaid expansion put in place by the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration after the emergency declaration is lifted? Yes 12% No 78% Und. 10% Should Idaho implement California’s vehicle emission standards regulating greenhouse gas emissions? Yes 3% No 96% Und. 1% Keep up with the latest on Idaho small business at www.nfib.com/idaho.
