Local job creators hear from lawmakers, panelists, and small business experts at NFIB’s Small Business Day in Austin

AUSTIN (Feb. 15, 2023) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) here in Texas hosted Small Business Day, which featured a keynote address from Governor Greg Abbott.

During his address, Governor Abbott reiterated his commitment to providing small business owners with needed property tax and regulatory relief:

“It’s really our small businesses that help drive our economy and help drive our business success in Texas. About 99 percent of all businesses in the state of Texas are small businesses, and they employ about half of all working Texans. You all together, have made Texas the economic legend that we are. [….] We’re going to leave this session with small businesses doing better than they ever have.”

Following the event, NFIB State Director Annie Spilman commended the Governor’s remarks and urged the 88th Legislature to get to work:

“In the past three years, local job creators have faced numerous economic uncertainties. Still, small businesses have shown their resiliency. Governor Abbott has made the commitment to endorse legislation that would protect against regulatory overreach that would create barriers to economic growth, workforce development and fiscal stability. The Governor has also committed to meaningful property tax relief, vowing to raise the inventory tax exemption from $2,500 to at least $100,000. We look forward to working with lawmakers to get both of these priorities to Governor Abbott’s desk for signature. When lawmakers here in Austin help our small business owners, they help all Texans.”

Attendees also heard from Chairman Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), NFIB President Brad Close, and other small business experts. Last week, Chairman Burrows introduced the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act, which would limit the scope of regulations on small businesses to state and federal law. Sen. Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) filed companion legislation in the Senate.
