NFIB’s ‘Cut the Inventory Tax’ featured on ABC13’s ‘This Week in Texas’
AUSTIN (Jan. 17, 2023) – “If you were to take a building and dump it upside down, that small business owner would be taxed on everything that would fall out,” NFIB State Director Annie Spilman said in an interview with ABC13’s Tom Abrahams for ‘This Week in Texas.’ During their conversation, Spilman outlined why the Texas Legislature must cut the inventory tax, which falls heavily on small business owners.
“Last week, I heard from an NFIB member in Bastrop,” Spilman said. “They own a little bookstore and they’re paying this tax on every single book in their business. And he said, ‘At this point, with everything I’m going through, the taxes, the regulations, the difficulty finding someone to man the counter – is it worth staying in business? It’s just another burden.’”
When asked how the inventory tax impacts Texans, Spilman said, “Yes, while this inventory tax has a bigger impact on small businesses because they cannot absorb the extra burden, at the end of the day, this really hurts all businesses in the state.”
