SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORTS PROPOSAL REQUIRING FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS AND TERM LIMIT REFORMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (LANSING) – The state’s leading small business organization, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), today announced its support for the constitutional ballot proposal put forth by Voters for Transparency and Term Limits. “NFIB members have supported term limits since the very beginning. In fact, NFIB was the only business organization that supported the original proposal, and our members have resisted any changes ever since,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director. Fisher explained that NFIB sets its policy positions by balloting its members. “For the first time in decades, NFIB’s small business owners have indicated support for an adjustment to term limits in Michigan,” continued Fisher. “When given the background and arguments for and against the proposal, more than 70 percent indicated their support.” “The financial transparency piece of the proposal was key in swaying our members,” said Fisher. “Financial transparency and accountability for elected officials is crucial for small business owners to be able to trust those who are elected to represent them.” “This proposal cuts, not expands, the total number of years a legislator can serve, which keeps with the spirit of the original term limits proposal while adding much needed financial transparency. We would encourage lawmakers to hold hearings on the issue and consider placing the proposal directly on the November 2022 ballot,” concluded Fisher.
