NFIB Tells the Michigan Senate to Pause the Gas Tax

On Thursday, May 26, 2022, NFIB Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher testified in front of the Michigan Senate Transportation Committee to support bills that would pause the fuel tax (SB 1029), as well as the sales tax on fuel paid at the pump (SBs 972, 973, 974).

Fisher relayed that she had fallen off a stepladder on to concrete a couple of days before and had bandages on her face. Her testimony continued:

“My face represents how my members, small business owners, feel right now. When COVID happened, they ‘fell off the stepladder.’ Most got back up and went back to work. Then supply chain issues came along and pushed them off the ladder, and they got back up.  Then inflation, and now gas prices. When COVID came along, much like when I fell, it was unexpected. No one was there to catch or help me. But since the first ‘fall,’ government has been there watching and barely helping. Of the billions of dollars Michigan has in both federal and state funds, less than $1 billion has gone to help small businesses recover from the past two years. Lowering the price of gas is not a panacea, but it is one way to help lessen the burden on small business…a hand of support on the stepladder.”

All bills passed out of the full Senate later in the day with bipartisan support.  The bills await action in the House.
