Local Job Creators Disappointed They Won’t See Tax Reform

TOPEKA (April 27, 2023) – Following lawmakers’ failure to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of bipartisan tax reform, small business owners are disappointed they won’t see meaningful tax relief this legislative session. The bipartisan tax reform passed out of the Legislature last month would have eliminated the three-tiered income tax structure and replaced it with a single, flat tax rate. NFIB State Director Dan Murray said: “The bipartisan tax reform lawmakers passed last month would have provided real relief for small business owners, who continue to battle historically high price increases and a persistent worker shortage. The flat tax would have also put our economy on a stronger footing. Neighboring states, including Colorado and Illinois, both have a flat tax, easing the compliance burden on small business owners there. It’s disappointing that Governor Kelly vetoed this needed reform, and that lawmakers were unwilling to override her decision. Ultimately, it’s Kansas small business owners who will shoulder both the higher compliance and tax burden until the Legislature acts.”
