IL Legislative Session Begins Jan. 13

Date: January 04, 2021

The 2021 session of the General Assembly will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 13, and we’ll be tracking legislation that could have an impact on your small business.

One of the most pressing issues facing lawmakers is what the state can do to help small businesses get through and recover from the economic downtown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. One in four small businesses surveyed last month by the NFIB Research Center warned they may have to close within the next six months unless economic conditions improve. We also expect to see efforts to expand workers’ comp because of the coronavirus.

Other issues expected to come up this session include:

  • Assorted “revenue enhancements,” better known as tax increases
  • New employer mandates such as paid sick leave for businesses regardless of size and “predictive scheduling,” which would penalize businesses for last-minute changes in people’s work schedules
  • Legislative oversight of executive authority
