The $1.8 Billion Press Conference, Tomorrow

NFIB, the state’s largest and leading small-business association, will join other groups at a press conference, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9, for the unveiling of a new study by the Common Sense Institute detailing more than $1.8 billion in new costs borne by the business community in Colorado.

“The study makes for sobering reading,” said NFIB Colorado State Director Tony Gagliardi. “It will be interesting to see how many of our state legislators will take it as the alarm bell it is and how many will brush it aside and carry on with business as usual.”

Kristin Strohm of the Common Sense Institute will present the study’s findings, which include:

  • There were 150,000 fewer jobs in Colorado in December 2020 relative to the start of the years, representing a 5.4% cut
  • State taxable sales were down $8.9B, or -1.35%, in 2020 relative to 2019
  • Colorado’s unemployment rate increased by the second most among all states
  • Unemployment insurance taxes are projected to increase by over $500 million, or 84% within next two years
  • The cumulative cost of new taxes and fees will be approximately $1.8B per year within the next 3-5 years

Joining Gagliardi at the Zoom conference will be:

  • Loren Furman, Senior Vice President of State and Federal Relations, Colorado Chamber of Commerce
  • Dave Davia, CEO and Executive Vice President, Rocky Mountain Mechanical Contractors Association
  • Rachel Beck, Vice President of Government Affairs, Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and EDC
  • Diane Schwenke, President and CEO, Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce
  • Kelly Brough, President and CEO, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce
