Important Missouri Small Business Legislation Passed

Date: June 02, 2021

NFIB in Missouri is thanking state lawmakers for making small-business issues a priority during a successful 2021 legislative session.

Recently, Brad Jones, NFIB State Director in Missouri, penned a letter to the editor that appeared in the Jefferson City News Tribune. In that article, he wrote:

The NFIB, or the National Federation of Independent Business here in Missouri, is thanking state lawmakers for making small-business issues a priority during a successful 2021 legislative session.

Lawmakers passed very important legislation that will help Missouri small-business owners recover from the COVID-19 health and economic crisis by eliminating the burden they would have faced with the threat of frivolous lawsuits.

Small-business owners are anticipating Gov. Mike Parson will sign this vital piece of legislation since he has already declared it an important priority.

According to an NFIB survey, nearly 70 percent of our small-business owners are concerned about being slapped with a lawsuit from customers and employees afraid about the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey of Missouri small-business owners found 98 percent of our members are worried about being sued by a rogue attorney looking to make a quick buck.

That makes it clear: Our small- business owners in Missouri were worried the liability risk from COVID-19 was a barrier to reopening the economy. Here’s the good news. Thanks to the actions of the Missouri Legislature, small-business owners are now more confident as they begin to reopen their doors and welcome customers and tourists back into Missouri.

We all know our small-business owners have been doing everything they can to protect their customers and employees from the pandemic by investing in face masks, disinfectant, protectant shields and other protective measures.

Thanks to actions by the Legislature, small-business owners can now focus on creating jobs and running their businesses instead of worrying about the possibility of losing everything in court.

Thank you to the lawmakers who recognize small businesses are the backbone of our economy and they should be able to run their businesses based on economic models that work best for them, not the government.
