Learn what shopping small means to all communities and get expert tips on wage and hour compliance

Episode 34: Shopping Small Beyond Main Street

What does shopping small mean, and what is considered a small business? These terms are thrown around, but there are varying definitions of what size constitutes a small business, what it means to shop small, and why it is important.

NFIB members Kim Duncan, owner of Goldenlight Visions in Manhattan, New York, and Amy Morgan, owner of LeFleur in Washington, Illinois, join the Small Business Rundown podcast to share how small businesses create neighborhoods, the importance of personal relationships that build customer loyalty, and the crucial customer service that small business shopping provides. NFIB Tennessee State Director Jim Brown also discusses how important small businesses are to his state and the importance of getting to know your elected officials.

Wage and Hour Compliance for Small Businesses and the New DOL Overtime Rule Explained

The May webinar features special guest Brad Kelley, of Littler, who goes over wage and hour compliance, including overtime calculations and  mandatory recordkeeping. NFIB has a Guide to Wage and Hour Laws with more compliance information.

The new Department of Labor (DOL) overtime rule was also explained in the webinar. It will significantly increase the salary threshold (from $35,568 to $58,656) for overtime exemptions, impacting executive, administrative, and professional workers, as well as the highly compensated employee exemption.
