Property Tax Relief Ideas Discussed

Members of the Property Tax Relief Task Force met on June 30 to review a two-page list of potential recommendations that were grouped as follows (with additional details for each group):

Existing Relief Programs

  • Homestead Exemption
  • Property Tax Fairness Credit
  • Property Tax Deferral Program
  • Current Use Programs
  • Exempt Property
  • Personal Property Tax Changes

Property Tax Assessment – Determining Assessed Value

Municipal (non-school) & County Level Programs

  • Municipal Consolidation of Services
  • Establish/Reform other Taxes/Fees or Revenue Sources
  • Revenue Sharing

New Options for Assessing Property Taxes

  • Options for split-rate or split-roll taxes
  • Statewide property tax to pay for education

Several members cautioned that a “whack-a-mole” approach to providing relief to some groups could lead of shifting burdens to elsewhere.

Future meetings have not been announced yet.  A final report is due by December 15, 2026.
