On June 16, NFIB State Director Jim Brown hosted a webinar looking at how small businesses fared in this year’s session of the Tennessee General Assembly.

He was joined by Michael Moschel of the law firm Littler Mendelson PC, James V. Thompson of the Jackson law firm Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell PLC and Beth Milito, executive director of the NFIB Small Business Legal Center.

This year’s legislative session ended on April 23.

Small business victories included HB 1034/SB 995, a compromise non-compete law that preserves employers’ ability to protect proprietary business interests while prohibiting non-compete agreements for employees earning less than $70,000 annually and establishing clearer standards for courts to evaluate their enforcement.

Other legislative wins included the Regulatory Freedom Act. HB 1913/SB 2199 requires state agencies to obtain feedback from the community they’re seeking to regulate so agencies, lawmakers and impacted businesses understand the true cost of proposed rules and regulations.
