Nationwide UI Conference Held in Salt Lake City

NFIB members, Utah legislators spoke at three-day gathering

A ‘National UI Issues Conference’ was held in Salt Lake City, May 13-15, featuring officials and experts on unemployment insurance from around the country.

NFIB Utah Leadership Council Member Mark Lewon, vice president of operations for Utah Metal Works, participated on one panel discussion, Expanding Quarterly Wage Report Requirements—Policy + Administrative Issues. NFIB Senior State Director Christopher Carlozzi spoke on another panel discussion on recent state law changes.

Other panel discussions included:

  • Identity Theft, UI Benefit Overpayment and Recovery
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave
  • Labor Disputes and UI Eligibility Issues
  • Artificial Intelligence Applications for Unemployment Insurance
  • State UI Administrative Funding.

 

Mike Schultz, speaker of the Utah House of Representatives, and J. Stuart Adams, president of the Utah Senate, welcomed attendees. The full, three-day schedule with topics and speakers can be read here.

In its 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index, the Tax Foundation ranked Utah 29th. Of the 75 issues NFIB’s latest quadrennial Small Business Problems & Priorities report measures, ‘unemployment compensation’ came in 35th.
