The COMPETE Act expands access to Short-Term Limited Duration Insurance plans
What it means: Short-Term Limited Duration Insurance plans offer a flexible and affordable option for small businesses and their employees. NFIB sent letters of support to both chambers of Congress for the COMPETE Act, which expands the time period to 12 months for Short-Term Limited Duration Insurance and creates a renewal guarantee for consumers without any additional underwriting.

Short-Term Limited Duration Insurance (STLDI) plans offer an affordable and flexible option for small businesses and their employees. Health care affordability is a top concern for small businesses and their employees, with premiums increasing 120% for individuals over the past two decades.
The previous administration issued regulations that severely restricted STLDI plans to only three months, which limited their viability. The COMPETE Act allows individuals to access STLDI plans for 12 months and renew these affordable plans. NFIB sent a letter to the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House urging lawmakers to pass this legislation, which will expand access to flexible health plans for small businesses and employees.
Small businesses need affordable health care options to fight rising health care costs that have hindered their ability to grow, operate, and compete with larger businesses that have greater access to health care benefits. Congress must pass legislation to help inject competition in the marketplace and give individuals access to affordable health care options like Short-Term Limited Duration health plans.
