Colorado Small Business Community Applauds Effort to Eliminate Credit Card Swipe Fees on Sales Taxes

March 5, 2026

“Credit card companies should not be allowed to profit off Colorado’s tax system.”

DENVER (March 5, 2026) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the state’s leading small business advocacy organization, announced its strong support for SB 134, a bipartisan bill that will provide immediate relief to small business owners by excluding sales tax from costly swipe fees (also known as interchange fees) charged by credit card networks.

In a statement, NFIB State Director Michael Smith described how the rising cost of swipe fees poses a serious challenge to small business owners and consumers alike.

“The rising cost of credit card swipe fees poses a serious challenge for Main Street. Small business owners should not be penalized for collecting taxes on the government’s behalf, and credit card companies should not be allowed to profit off Colorado’s tax system. On behalf of our members, we thank the Legislature for introducing SB 134, a bipartisan bill that will provide immediate relief to Main Street and their consumers.”
