NFIB joins Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse in op-ed published in Crain’s Chicago Business

NFIB Illinois State Director Noah Finley and Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse Executive Director Phil Melin recently penned an opinion piece that ran in Crain’s Chicago Business warning that the monetization of law enforcement hurts small businesses.

“Illinois lawmakers have been experimenting with a troubling idea. They are quietly turning law enforcement over to private actors.

Recently adopted laws empower private actors, defined as “interested part[ies],” to sue employers for alleged statutory “violations.” Under these new provisions, special-interest actors — on behalf of workers that they do not represent — can seek penalties, demand injunctions, and collect attorneys’ fees and a share of fines from Illinois job creators without regard to public or employee interests.

This is not civil justice. This is privatization of public law enforcement, the private monetization of the legal system.”
