Learn how several key employment laws affect small business
The NFIB Small Business Legal Center provides tools, tips, and resources to help small business owners navigate many of the legal and regulatory issues that impact American small businesses. The legal center published a blog covering the basics of key federal employment laws for small business owners, along with resources to stay current on how these laws affect small businesses.
Ensure that your small business is protected from fines, violations, lawsuits, and more by understanding several critical federal employment laws. NFIB’s Legal Center gives a basic overview of some of the most important employment laws to know.
- Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): This law applies to nearly all employers and deals with minimum wage, overtime pay, and child labor. For more in-depth information on the FLSA, visit NFIB’s Guide to Wage & Hour Laws.
- Equal Pay Act: The Equal Pay Act affects all employers and prohibits paying different wages or offering different benefits between men and women who perform the same duties for the same employer.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): The ADA covers a wide range of disabilities, both visual and non-visual, and prohibits employers with 15 or more employees from discriminating against qualified individuals who meet the educational, experience, or skill requirements of the job and can perform the essential job functions. NFIB’s Guide to Responding to ADA Lawsuits has additional information to help protect small businesses.
While understanding these laws is critical for ensuring your small business complies with the federal requirements, NFIB’s Legal Center provides a blog with additional resources to help small business owners stay ahead of the curve.
