NFIB Illinois Joins Chicago’s Business Community in Opposition to Proposed Outdoor Workplace Heat Ordinance

October 9, 2025

The proposed ordinance would have a detrimental impact on Chicago's small businesses

NFIB Illinois signed onto a coalition letter from the Chicago business community to oppose the proposed “Heat-Related Illness Prevention in Outdoor Places of Employment Ordinance” in Chicago.

The letter highlights concerns with the  proposed ordinance raised by the business community. These concerns include:

  • Regulatory overreach and red tape
  • Exposure to frivolous and costly lawsuits
  • Carve-outs for favored groups
  • Expensive fines and penalties

You can read the full letter here.

The proposed ordinance passed the Chicago City Council’s Workforce Development Committee on September 25.

However, due to significant opposition, the proposed ordinance was held on October 16 and not called for a vote.
