Shopping Small During Sales Tax Holiday Could Bolster Texas’ Main Street Economy

July 30, 2025

Certain back-to-school items will be exempt from sales tax on Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10.

AUSTIN (July 30, 2025) – Ahead of the annual Sales Tax Holiday, NFIB State Director Jeff Burdett is urging Texans to shop small. The sales tax holiday, which begins on Friday, August 8, and runs through the weekend, is a great opportunity to support local businesses.

“Texans can kick off the start of the new school year by shopping small,” Burdett said. “Main Street is the foundation of our economy. They create good-paying jobs for Texans, meet their customers’ needs, and help our communities thrive. Every purchase made at a small business supports the Lone Star State’s local economy, and during the sales tax holiday, those hard-earned dollars go even further. It’s a small way to make a big difference for Main Street.”

Background:

According to the Texas Comptroller, the 2025 Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday, August 8, and concludes at midnight Sunday, August 10.
