Support Missouri’s Small Businesses During the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

July 21, 2025

Certain back-to-school items will be exempt from sales tax Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3

JEFFERSON CITY (July 21, 2025) – Ahead of the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, NFIB State Director Brad Jones is encouraging Missourians to shop small. The sales tax holiday, which begins on Friday, August 1, and runs through the weekend, is a great opportunity to support local businesses.

“Main Street is the foundation of our economy, creating good-paying jobs, meeting customers’ needs, and keeping our communities thriving,” Jones said. “Every purchase made at a small business supports the Missouri economy. And during the tax-free holiday, your hard-earned dollars go even further. It’s a small way to make a big difference here at home.”

Background:

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the 2025 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 AM CT on Friday, August 1, and runs through Sunday, August 3. The 2025 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday exempts all state and local sales or use tax taxes during the exemption period on qualifying items. During prior years only state and some local sales and use taxes were exempt, Senate Bill 153 changed this by exempting all local sales and use tax on qualifying items.
