Legislative wins in Augusta

VICTORIES

Stopped 2.85% Tax on Maine Health Insurance

NFIB successfully fought against legislation to impose a 2.85% tax on health insurance premiums. The tax would have raised costs by over $45 million annually.

PPP Maine Tax Conformity

NFIB worked with Governor Mills to ensure over 26,000 small businesses would not be taxed on Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. The result was tax savings of $80-$100 million.

Preserve Employment-at-Will

NFIB helped organize and lead a coalition of 45 statewide and local business groups to defeat legislation prohibiting employment-at-will. “Just cause” dismissal would have significantly hiked employment costs.

Estate Tax Exclusion Threshold

NFIB successfully opposed efforts to undo “LePage Tax Cuts” and preserve the inflation-adjusted estate tax exclusion threshold instead of lowering the exclusion to $2 million.
