Sales Tax Holidays a Chance to Support Local Businesses

NFIB State Executive Director Bill Herrle says Florida’s tax holidays on school supplies and children’s books are a chance for people to support local businesses still reeling from a series of economic setbacks that began with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This year’s back-to-school tax holiday on school supplies, clothing, and computers is July 25-Aug. 7. In addition, there is a tax holiday on children’s books through Aug. 14, tax holidays on Energy Star appliances, baby and toddler clothes, and children’s diapers that run until June 30, 2023, and a tax holiday on impact-resistant doors, windows and garage doors that lasts until June 30, 2024. There will be a one-week tax holiday on select tools and safety equipment beginning Sept. 3 and a one-month suspension of Florida’s motor fuel tax starting Oct. 1. “These tax holidays are designed to help Floridians stretch a dollar, but they’re also important to the state’s small, independent businesses,” Herrle said. “Florida’s economy has fared better than a lot of other states’ these past two years, but inflation and supply chain issues are taking a toll on everyone,” Brown said. “By shopping at small, independent businesses during these tax holidays, we can repay the local businesses that continue to support our communities and provide jobs despite the many economic obstacles.” Small business owners surveyed for NFIB’s latest Small Business Economic Trends report ranked inflation as the No. 1  issue affecting their business, followed by quality of labor.
