New York Redistricting Update: New Maps for Congress and State Senate Released

After the New York State Court of Appeals ruled that the Democratic-drawn maps were unconstitutional, a court appointed “special master,” was tasked with redrawing new and fair districts for Congress and the state Senate. The special master released the proposed maps for Congress and Senate, which are vastly different than the Democrat-drawn maps setting up a number of competitive races. The newly drawn Congressional maps now have eight seats that are competitive compared to the previous map with only three competitive seats. The new state Senate maps have 15 competitive races, and while Senate Democrats will still hang onto their majority, they will likely lose the supermajority they secured after the 2020 election. The special master’s maps are open for public comment through Wednesday, May 18th, and then the state Supreme Court will finalize the maps by Friday, May 20th. Candidates will begin circulating petitions and the new primary for U.S. House and state Senate races will be held on Aug. 23rd. The primary for statewide offices and state Assembly races will still be held on the original primary date of June 28th.
