New York State to Suspend Gas Tax for Six Months

As part of the enacted 2022-23 New York State Budget, NFIB strongly supported and actively pushed for a suspension of the state’s gas tax to provide some relief to small businesses from rising fuel. The final budget included a provision to suspend the state motor fuel tax (8 cents) and sales tax (8 cents) from June 1, 2022 – Dec. 31, 2022, saving small businesses and consumers 16 cents per gallon. The state gas tax suspension is on both motor fuel and diesel fuel. Many counties throughout New York State have also suspended or capped their gas tax to provide additional relief as gas prices rise. While gas prices are at record highs, this modest tax relief is much needed.
