New York’s Redistricting Saga Continues

Last week, New York’s highest court ordered the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) to submit a new congressional map by February 28th, 2024. The Legislature gets final approval and can draw its own districts if lawmakers vote down two attempts by the IRC.

The court’s decision is a win for Democrats, eager to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives next year. However, New York Republicans criticized the court’s ruling and will challenge any map they think is a partisan gerrymander.

The state is currently using lines drawn by a special master last year after a lengthy court battle. NFIB will inform members of redistricting updates, including new district maps/lines, opportunities for public comment, and impacts to election dates such as the primary.
