Small Business Praises State House Passage of Legislation to Make Fixes to the Earned Sick Time Act and Tipped Wages

January 23, 2025

HB 4001 and 4002 pass the House with bipartisan support

NFIB Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher applauded the House passage of HB 4001 and 4002, legislation that would restore the restaurant server tipped wage and modify the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA). Both laws are set to take effect on Feb. 21, 2025, unless the Legislature acts.

“NFIB is grateful to Speaker Hall and all the legislators on both sides of the aisle who voted to help small businesses in Michigan by making common sense changes to ESTA and the tipped wage,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director.

“The changes contained in House Bill 4002 (ESTA) are especially crucial to all small business owners with employees. We have heard from countless small businesses who will be forced to reduce current leave for many of their full-time employees to comply with this act.”

“In addition, small businesses neither have the staff nor financial margin to deal with this confusing and punitive act. We implore the State Senate to act quickly in order to prevent small employers and their employees from the unintended consequences of the harmful language contained in this ill-conceived policy. The commonsense changes contained in House Bill 4002.”
