New York Ordered to Redistrict House Maps, Potentially Shaking Up Congressional Seats in the 2024 Elections

A New York appellate court has ordered New York State to redraw congressional lines ahead of the 2024 elections, in a surprising victory for Democrats. In June 2022, New York voters brought a lawsuit requesting the bipartisan Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) to redraw congressional lines in the state after its first set of maps were rejected. The rejected lines were redrawn by a neutral, court-ordered “special master.” In a 3-2 ruling on July 13th, the appellate court reversed a lower court’s decision and ordered the IRC to create new proposed state congressional lines which could impact 26 House seats — 15 held by Democrats and 11 by the GOP. If the congressional districts revert to 2022 lines, it could jeopardize Republican wins in battleground seats on Long Island, Staten Island, and the Hudson Valley, and could risk GOP control of the House. Republicans are vowing to appeal. NFIB will be closely monitoring this issue. Read more HERE.
