200,000 expected to transition to employer coverage

Minnesota to Resume Medicaid Eligibility Verification

During the pandemic, Minnesota and the federal government suspended eligibility verification for those enrolled in Medicaid. In normal times, eligibility is verified on an ongoing basis to ensure that enrollees are under Medicaid’s income and asset limits among other requirements. When eligibility verification resumes on August 1, 2023, the state expects roughly 375,000 to lose coverage. Of those, the Minnesota Council of Health Plans (MCHP) expects about 200,000 people to move to employer-sponsored coverage. MCHP published a tip sheet for employers who offer health coverage to prepare for the upcoming transition: Medicaid Unwinding Resources: Employers (mnhealthplans.org). The loss of Medicaid coverage triggers a 60-day “qualifying life event” window where employees can enroll in employer sponsored or individual coverage outside of the open enrollment period. If you have questions about how this transition may impact your workforce, please contact NFIB Minnesota State Director John Reynolds at john.reynolds@nfib.org.
