ODESSA (June 16, 2023) – “Small business owners generally do not have in-house compliance officers or an HR department or an attorney on hand to help them keep up with day-to-day regulations,” NFIB State Director Annie Spilman told ABC Big 2 News’ Garrett Hottle. “These small business owners oftentimes don’t even know they’re not in compliance with a law or local ordinance until they’re slapped with a fine.” But there’s good news for small business owners in Texas. This week, Governor Greg Abbott signed the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act into law, which will help small business owners better comply with regulations, rather than being burdened by the complexity of multiple jurisdictions of law over their business practices. “It gives small business owners some sense of certainty and some sense that people are standing up for the little guy,” Spilman said. The House approved the bill on a bipartisan basis in April, and the Senate passed the bill in May. NFIB and local job creators testified before both the House and Senate in support of the bill, with one NFIB member saying: “We need the protection of the state, when it comes to cities telling us how to run our businesses.” READ: FACT CHECK: Patchwork of Regulations Threatens Texas Small Business Owners
