NFIB Participates in Press Conference Supporting Association Health Plan Legislation

House Bill 555 which was introduced by Representative Valerie Gaydos (R-Allegheny) would provide a mechanism for employers to join together to offer quality health insurance as a benefit for their employees. The authorization of Association Health Plans is a priority for NFIB, and we recently participated in a press conference with lawmakers and other stakeholders in support of getting this legislation passed and signed into law. “When small businesses group together, they are able to spread out the risk across the group and negotiate for discounted health insurance coverage the same way large businesses currently purchase health benefits on the group insurance market. This will provide a decrease in costs for small businesses and puts the employer in a competitive position to maintain and attract a talented workforce,” said Rep. Gaydos State Director Greg Moreland offered the following comments in support of this legislation, “NFIB has supported the concept of association health plans for many years. It would allow small business owners to purchase health insurance coverage through membership associations. That would create greater market power and be subject to fewer costly regulations, leading to lower premiums. Small businesses deserve health insurance that is affordable, flexible, and predictable and we are calling on lawmakers to support association health plans as a way for small businesses owner to provide the important benefit of health insurance to their employees.” HB 555 is currently before the House Insurance Committee.
