NFIB Testifies on Negative Impacts of Energy Tax

On June 12th State Director Greg Moreland testified before the House Republican Policy Committee on the negative impacts of the $663 million energy tax found in Gov. Josh Shapiro’s and House Democrats’ budget plan for the 2023-24 Fiscal Year. According to the Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) – a nonpartisan agency designed to provide revenue projections and analysis for use in the state budget process – the tax would increase electricity rates by nearly four times. Throughout his testimony, Moreland discussed the importance of affordable energy for small businesses. “Here in Pennsylvania, we are uniquely situated to be the solution to powering our lives and livelihoods affordably, effectively, and efficiently. Thanks to the Commonwealth’s prolific natural gas reserves, Pennsylvania is now one of the leading natural gas-producing states in the country – second only to Texas. Yet, policymakers continue to set forth policies and proposals that negatively affect the business climate, [including, but the proposed 30 percent energy tax] while at the same time stating they would like to make the Commonwealth more competitive. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t continue, or threaten, to tax our business owners at higher rates, and say we are ‘Open for Business,” said Moreland. Watch the hearing here.
