General Assembly Passes Income Tax Refund

On Tuesday, the state Senate voted 46-7 to pass House Bill 161, a measure giving income tax refunds to Georgians for the second year in a row. The measure would refund up to $250 to single filers, $375 to single adults who head a household with dependents, and $500 to married couples filing jointly. It would be paid only to people who filed state tax returns for 2021 and 2022, and no one could receive more than they paid in state income taxes in 2021. People who didn’t owe state income taxes are ineligible for refunds. “This is good for Georgia’s small business community because most small businesses are organized as pass-through entities, meaning any profit passes through the business directly to the owner, who pays taxes at the individual tax rate,” NFIB State Director Hunter Loggins said. “The most anyone could receive is $500, but given the toll that inflation has taken on Main Street businesses, every penny helps.”
