Likely Voters in Michigan Know the Biden-Harris Gas-Car Ban is Bad for the Economy and Consider the Issue ‘Important’ for 2024

LANSING, Mich. (July 17, 2024) – New polling conducted in Michigan on behalf of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in Michigan and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) shows that among likely voters, the United States is on the wrong track and there is strong opposition to government policies designed to ban new gas-powered vehicles. Further, small business is essential to a healthy economy, and regulations like the emissions mandate are harmful to small business. The polling — fielded in Michigan between June 29 – July 1 — was conducted by Remington Research Group and measured likely voter sentiment around the direction of the country, issue importance, gas-car bans, and support for candidates who embrace such policies. Highlights of the polls are as follows: Michiganders believe the United States is headed in the wrong direction.
  • 57% wrong track, 34% right track, 9% not sure
The majority of likely voters in Michigan oppose gas-car bans.
  • 63% oppose, 18% support, 19% undecided
A supermajority in Michigan report that a candidate’s position on stopping bans on new gas-cars is an important factor in their vote.
  • 68% important, 12% not important
Almost all of likely voters in Michigan know the importance of small businesses to a healthy economy.
  • 96% agree important to economy, 2% disagree, 2% not sure
The majority of likely voters in Michigan believe recent rules and regulations being passed by the state and federal government, like the emissions mandate, are harmful to small business.
  • 41% agree, 25% disagree, 34% unsure
NFIB Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher issued the following statement on the new polling: “This new polling makes one thing clear; Michiganders know that America is on the wrong track. The only thing Washington is delivering for them are burdensome regulations and failed, unpopular policies. Leaders in Washington and in Lansing should stand up for small business and end harmful regulations like the EPA’s gas car ban. It’s time to reverse course before it’s too late.” –Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director AFPM President and CEO Chet Thompson issued the following statement on the new polling: “This new polling underscores what we have been hearing from the American people of all political stripes for months—that they do not want the government banning gas cars, mandating electric vehicles or imposing regulations that restrict access to the types of cars that best meet a family’s needs and budget. “Elected officials should take note that the American people care about this issue and are watching to see whether Congress will stand up and overturn EPA’s regulation banning the sale of most new gas cars.” -Chet Thompson, AFPM President and CEO Methodology: Survey conducted June 29 through July 1, 2024. 584 likely 2024 General Election voters participated in the survey.
